Incorporating a farmhouse flair into your home’s decor takes only a few simple DIY projects and a little of your time.
Use the head of an antique metal garden rake as a cooking utensil rack. Just mount the garden rake head with the tines pointing away from the wall, and hang some cooking utensils like whisks, slotted spoons, or ladles from each tine.
Take an old worn wooden ladder and lean it against a wall, then use each step or rung of the ladder to display sentimental items. If the ladder has rounded rungs, you can display a folded quilt over every other rung. If the ladder has flat steps built into it, use them as mini shelves and display small picture frames or other knickknacks on them.
If you have some old Ball mason jars lying around, paint the outside of the jars a milk white color (or any color you desire). Then use sandpaper lightly over the raised letters on the jar to bring attention to the lettering. You can also sand a few random spots as well, to add a weathered look. Then line up three jars together, using the jars to organize cooking utensils, children’s markers or crayons, or other items.
If you find an old wagon wheel at a yard sale or antique store, take it home and stain or paint it, then mount it over your mantle to become the focal point of your living room. At Christmas time, you can use it to display your Christmas cards. Just punch a hole in the upper left corner of the card, thread a pretty ribbon through the hole, and tie the ribbon around one of the struts of the wagon wheel. Do this with several cards, spaced apart, and you’ll have a rustic country Christmas card display.
For a truly rustic country decor project, take a large tin can, wash it and dry it well, then paint it inside and out with a cream-colored paint. When it’s dry, use some sandpaper to lightly sand any raised edges or a few random spots, in order to give the cans a shabby chic appearance. Then wrap some jute string a few times around the center of each can, and tie it off. Take some burlap ribbon and create a ribbon “rose” with it. Hot glue the burlap rose over the jute knot, then hot glue a faux pearl into the center of the rose. Use the painted cans as a pretty way to organize flatware at your next barbecue.
You can use burlap and lace to create adorable rustic pockets to slip your silverware into at each table setting for a country-themed dinner. Cut some burlap fabric into strips that are fourteen inches long and six inches wide. Then fold the burlap strips until one of the narrow ends lay about two inches lower than the other end. Sew up each side of the burlap fabric to create the pockets. Then take a six-inch-long strip of lace (about 1 to 2 inches wide) and sew the strip of lace so that it lays about a half an inch below the pocket opening.
